So A Pocketknife Could Be Illegal, But a 3 Foot Sword?

So, I just spent a little time researching California and local laws online. I have discovered that it is permissible for me to carry around swords most places. Not in Pismo or in LA County, but other than that, I'm good.

There is much room in the various laws regarding switchblades and similar knives, and guns, but the primary concern with objects that have a fixed blade (such as a sword) is that it's not concealed. Of course, concealing a sword would defeat one of the primary purposes (intimidation), so that's not an issue.

Sadly, cane swords and pen swords are specifically forbidden in California. Sorry Chris, it seems that our lawmakers are fairly creative too. However, I am confused as to why they took the effort to enumerate tons of possible concealed blades (including a misspelled or made-up Japanese word), instead of just saying "concealed bladed objects." Unless they wanted to leave room for loopholes. Hmm...

Don't worry, I'm not about to start wearing those swords everywhere. I'm just glad to know I could (legally!) if I wanted to.

I totally think you should start wearing them. If nothing else, it'll give me another excuse (in addition to Taylor telling me not to) not to attack you the next time I see you . . .

Although . . . your strike might have been a little more painful with swords, now that I think about it . . .

Yeah I second what Mark said. I would be dissapointed if I never see you carrying around your sword. Here's to freedom.

Also, I wonder if this applies to machete's?

It's a fixed blade, so yes. But verify county and city laws too. Sometimes those are more restrictive.

Oh, and for the purposes of the appropriate laws, in a sheath hanging openly from your waist is considered non-concealed.
